Enemy at the Gates is a 2001 war film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, starring Jude Law and Ed Harris set during the Battle of Stalingrad in World War II.

The film's title is taken from William Craig's 1973 nonfiction book Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad, which describes the events surrounding the Battle of Stalingrad from 1942 - 1943. It is based on a duel mentioned in the book that developed between Soviet sniper Vasily Zaytsev and his rival, Major Erwin König, as they stalk each other during the battle. The movie is also partially based on the book War of the Rats. The film was released under the title Stalingrad in continental Europe, although Enemy at the Gates is printed in smaller lettering underneath the main title on the box of the DVD release.

Vassili Zaitsev

  • I am a stone. I do not move.
    • First lines of the film; the main character, as a child, is shooting a wolf.

  • It's your turn to get a hole in your britches.

  • On this day, September 20th 1942, a young shepherd boy from the Urals arrived in the city of Stalingrad on the banks of the Volga. His name is Vassili Zaitsev. Like thousands before him he came to answer comrade Stalin's call. Armed only with a rifle, he quickly made the fascist invader realize that from now on he would be punished for every step he took in the motherland, that from here on the only way was back.
  • I want to help you Vassili. Let me do one last thing, something useful for a change. Let me show you where the Major is.
    • After saying this line, Danilov removes his helmet and moves into the open where he is shot by the Major, revealing his position.

Miscellaneous lines

  • The one with the rifle shoots. The one without follows him. When the one with the rifle gets killed, the one who is following picks up the rifle and shoots.
    • In the opening battle, the officer handing out one rifle to every two soldiers repeats this line.
