This page is a collection of quotations from the era of the eighth official incarnation of the the Doctor from the BBC science fiction television programme Doctor Who, during which the role of the Eighth Doctor was played by Paul McGann. As Doctor Who stories in other media (such as books, audio plays, etc) are the subject of intense debate as regarding their place in the series' overall canon, these quotations are taken entirely from episodes broadcast on television.

Amongst the television Doctors, the Eighth Doctor is unique in the fact that his only onscreen appearence was in the 1996 television movie Doctor Who. In order to avoid confusion with the rest of the series, the movie is usually referred to as "The Television Movie", "TVM" or "Enemy Within".

Doctor Who

[Opening narration.]
The Doctor: It was on the planet Skaro that my old enemy, the Master, was finally put on trial. They say he listened calmly as his list of evil crimes was read and sentence passed. Then he made his last, and I thought somewhat curious, request. He demanded that I, the Doctor, a rival Time Lord, should take his remains back to our home planet - Gallifrey. It was a request they should never have granted.

[Narrating]
The Doctor: A Time Lord has 13 lives and the Master had used all of his. But rules never meant much to him, so I stowed his remains safely for the voyage back. Because even in death, I couldn't trust him. In all my travels through space and time, and nearing the end of my seventh life, I was finally beginning to realise that you could never be too careful.

[As the Seventh Doctor.]
The Doctor: I am not human. I am not like you.
Grace: Nobody's like me, Mr. Smith.

[The Seventh Doctor's final words before regenerating.]
The Doctor: Timing malfunction. The Master! He's out there. I've got to stop him.

The Doctor: Grace, I came back to life before your eyes. I held back death. Look, I can't make your dream come true forever, but I can make it come true today.

The Doctor: This is when I wish I had my sonic screwdriver.

Grace: Are you okay?
The Doctor: Better, yes...
Grace: Good
The Doctor: ...now that I don't have a piece of primative wiring in my cardiovascular system.
Grace: Primitive?

The Doctor: (with sudden realisaton) Grace!
Grace: What?

[The Doctor kisses Grace]

The Doctor: I know who I am! I... am THE DOCTOR!
Grace: Great... (with relief) now do that again... [Kisses the Doctor again]

The Doctor: [through mail slot] Grace, let me in. We can sit down, we can have a cup of tea, and discuss this reasonably.
Grace: Sure, Time Lord to Earthling!
The Doctor: Yes, that's right; I'm a Time Lord.
Grace: But I thought you were a doctor!
The Doctor: [incredulously] I thought you were a doctor!

The Doctor: Grace... Grace... I've lost twenty pounds.
Grace: [sarcastically] Congratulations!
The Doctor: In twenty minutes? It's starting!
Grace: You could make a fortune in the weight loss business, Doctor.

The Doctor: I love humans. Always seeing patterns in things that aren't there.

The Doctor: The world's about to be destroyed, and I'm stuck in a traffic jam!

The Master: What are we waiting for?
Chang Lee: The road's still blocked.
The Master: This is an ambulance!
Chang Lee: Oh, right.

The Doctor: Oh no, not again!

The Doctor: The sky above us was dancing with lights! Purple, green, brilliant yellow! [excited] Yes!
Grace: What?!
The Doctor: These shoes! They fit perfectly!

The Doctor: Low tech?! Grace, this is a Type 40 TARDIS, able to take you to any planet in the universe and to any date in that planet's existence! Temporal physics.

The Doctor: This is no time to be playing doctors and nurses...

The Doctor: Are you any good at setting alarm clocks?

The Doctor: Look over there! On the otherside of your galaxy, that's home.
Grace: [astonished] Gallifrey.
The Doctor:250 million light years away. That's a good 10 minutes in this old thing.

The Doctor: How can you miss me? I'm the guy with two hearts, remember?

Grace: Great, I finally meet the right guy and he's from another planet!

Grace: Maybe you have selective amnesia brought on by shock.
The Doctor: Maybe. I can't remember.

[Grace explains the Doctor's eccentricities.]
Grace: WAIT! Don't. He's... um... he's British.
The Doctor: Yes. Yes, I suppose I am. Jelly Baby, officer?

[The Doctor holding himself a hostage to a police officer.]
The Doctor: Now stand back before I’ll shoot myself.

Grace: Doctor?
The Doctor: Yes?
Grace: I only have one life. Can you remember that?
The Doctor: I'll try.
Grace: Thank you.

The Master: I never liked this planet, Doctor.
The Doctor: Well that's good, because any minute now it shall cease to exist!

The Doctor: This is his last chance to stay alive and you know it!
The Master: What do you know of last chances?!
The Doctor: More than you!

The Doctor: You want dominion over the living, yet all you do is KILL!
The Master: Life is wasted on the living!

Chang Lee: So, er...what happened to the Master?
[The TARDIS produces a deep grumbling sound.]
The Doctor: Indigestion.

Grace: There you go... interfering again.
The Doctor: Grace, there's something you should know--
Grace: Don't tell me.
The Doctor: Why not?
Grace: Because I know who I am and that's enough.
The Doctor: I'm glad.
