Pixies were an influential band of the late 80's. They broke up in 1993, but reformed in 2004 and toured throughout that year. They were darlings of the Boston college music scene throughout the 80s and until their break-up, and were famously cited by Kurt Cobain as his main influence in forming Nirvana.

Their early records, "Come on Pilgrim" and "Surfer Rosa", set out their stall as purveyors of powerful (if thoughtful) punk rock, with Joey Santiago's guitar riffs and Black Francis' controlled shriek creating the sound that would make them famous. But it was "Doolittle", their third album, that really made waves. Voted 2nd greatest album of all time by the influential New Musical Express magazine in 2003, it blended punk, ballad and full-on anthem into an indispensable long player with lyrics that kept university students in coffee-fuelled conversation for years. From the stunning opener Debaser, through the anthemic Wave of Mutilation and Monkey Gone to Heaven, stopping for the tortured Hey and ending with the assault on the senses that is Gouge Away, Doolittle is a record to savour and hand on down to your kids.

Pixies consist of members Frank Black, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and David Lovering.
