- Aleatory structures can, indeed, be seen as peculiarly appropriate to atonal music in general. The creation of musical works without tonal harmony had been a problem for half a century, ever since the first atonal works of Schoenberg, for with the loss of tonality had come the loss of the means for creating goal-directed forms, these means depending on the tonal phenomena of preparation, modulation and resolution. Schoenberg, Webern , Stockhausen and Boulez had all tried various ways of getting around this problem; aleatory composition allowed it to be ignored.
